Pretty buckskin girl Kestrel stood napping in one place during most of my last visit. Watching, too. The world revolved around her.
Hollywood’s band still is very close to Comanche’s band. In fact, the casual observer would never realize these are two distinct families. This dynamic may or may not be unique among wild horses, but it’s fairly unique within our herd (“the pintos” come to mind, only recently separated into Ty’s band and Corazon’s band).

Isn’t she gorgeous? Like her mama, Luna, like her firstborn daughter, Winona. (As Winona grows up, it’s incredible how much she resembles Kestrel; her likely sire is Mouse, who was removed last year.)

Fleet of Angels born online and now rolling on asphalt
Fleet Of Angels (www.fleetofangels.org) was launched with the singular purpose to connect a warm-hearted volunteer convoy of horse-haulers to prospective horse adopters, who simply lack the resources to transport these needy animals, and rescue them from danger.
Begun by longtime equestrian and horse lover Elaine Nash approximately six months ago, the mission of Fleet of Angels is straight forward: Bring at-risk horses from danger to safety, she says.
Having watched too many rescue horses flounder on Facebook, with their photographs posted and cross-posted to people who may not be able to really help, Nash decided to launch the organization that could literally step in, hook a lead rope onto a needy horse’s frayed halter, and lead that animal up a ramp and safely into a horse trailer.

Buon 2013 a tutti e un calendario mensile per voi
Ci siamo riusciti, abbiamo terminato questo dannato 2012, anno pieno di avvenimenti, ma anche e soprattutto di problemi, di guai, di accidenti e incidenti. Vero, nulla cambia con un semplice cambiar foglio al calendario, ma… Prendetelo come un augurio, abbiamo pensato di preparare un piccolo pensiero per tutti, questo.
Lo sappiamo, non siamo dei geni del computer e nemmeno dei normali, quindi la cosa è un poco com’è, per ora. vedremo di migliorarla presto, mettendo la possibilità di scaricare i PDF formato A4 e A3, sin dal calendario di febbraio.
Il pensiero speriamo conti, come si dice. Buon anno a tutti!
Other Patterns of White Hairs in Horses

This week will be a bit of a catch-all, covering a variety of patterns of white hairs that are neither grey, classic roan, face and leg markings, or associated with white spotting. (Varnish roan, for instance, is a leopard gene pattern, and sabino and dominant white may also produce roaning as part of the pattern.) The genetics of none are well understood. Following Sponenberg, I will list and describe them here. Sorry for the lack of photos, but I haven’t even seen all of these patterns myself.
The first, frosty, may be a variant of classic roan, as it is found in the same breeds. In this pattern, the roaning is most pronounced over bony areas such as the hips, and roaning may affect the mane, tail and head as well as the body. “Squaw manes” and “squaw tails” with white hair mixed in often indicate the frosty pattern…
