Dayton O. Hyde describes the 13,000 acres of land in South Dakota that is home to his Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, along with the wild horses that live there, as “a national treasure.” Hyde himself, an 88-year-old cowboy conservationist, is as precious a national treasure, a hero fighting to the end to protect the land, the water and the wildlife of the American West.

Un appello per salvare i cavalli delle Badlands, i Nokota
This is a great story that, we apologize, didn’t know anything about. Thanks for sharing. We are asking our friends to read and act as they can. We will soon translate it in Italian to share with more people.
Questa è una cosa grandiosa. Chiediamo scusa a chi non parla inglese tra noi se non la traduciamo subito, ma lo faremo presto. Il succo, in ogni caso, è questo. Ci sono un mucchio di cose che fanno riferimento ai cavalli delle Badlands, al Theodore Roosevelt National Park e allo spostamento forzato del 50 per cento dei cavalli presenti nel parco, finiti, pare, a un’asta che dovrebbe poi condurli, presumibilmente, al macello. Pare ci siano parecchie cose da capire, visto l’accumularsi di sigle e di, sembra, polemiche. Il dato di fatto è che ci hanno linkato, sperando di far crescere il rumore intorno a quest’asta e alla probabile fine di cavalli che sono, fuori da ogni schema commerciale, parte della storia d’America. Legga chi può adesso (gli altri appena traduciamo) e se si può fare qualcosa, facciamo. What is the difference between the Nokota® Horse and the North Dakota Badlands Horse? There are two major differences; the horses themselves and the people behind the breed registries and what principles they represent. Since this turned out to be a deeper issue than the title reveals and hence important to get the full picture to understand the life-changing outcome of this text; I beg of your patience in this lengthy blog post.

Badlands Wild Horses Saved From Slaughter

Questa foto mostra un gruppo dei 108 cavalli selvaggi salvati da un gruppo di volontari. Vengono dalle Badlands americane, dal parco intitolato a Teddy Roosevelt, il presidente americano noto per il suo amore per la natura selvaggia del suo paese (sì, era anche un cacciatore, ma questo non è il punto…). Peccato costi così tanto portarli in Italia (anche se potremmo pensare di metterci insieme per farlo, che ne dite? Aspettiamo commenti in merito).

Team effort prevents 103 wild horses from going to slaughter
WISHEK, ND (Oct 2, 2013) – Thanks to an enormous effort on the part of horse lovers across the country not one of the 103 Badlands wild horses removed from the Teddy Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) were purchased by kill buyers. This appears to be the first time in the history of the Park in which no Park horses went to slaughter. The Cloud Foundation (TCF) and affiliate organization Legacy Mustang Preservation (LMP) purchased 36 mustangs and worked together with North Dakota Badlands Horses (NDBH) to successfully publicize the Sept. 28 auction.
The public’s love of the mustang was evidenced by the outpouring of donations in from 7 countries; donations came from children, retirees, and even a homeless person. Generous equine advocate, Victoria McCullough stepped in just days before the auction and donated funds to…
